Sewing Basics

Can’t sew? We can fix that. Join us for our comprehensive beginner course! Learn how to sew while exploring the world of fabric, commercial patterns, alterations, and classic sewing techniques.

You will make a skirt fit for YOU and a cute sewing apron too!

 You will learn to:

  • Operate a sewing machine and serger
  • Sewing techniques (stay stitching, ease, darts, pleats, buttonhole and more!)
  • Properly press and iron garments for sewing
  • Take proper measurements
  • Identify and use various types of fabric, thread, and interfacing
  • Select the right fabric for your project
  • Install an invisible zipper
  • Work with commercial patterns (and pick the pattern that best compliments you!)
  • Construct a basic garment (skirt)

Students will need a domestic sewing machine, iron, and basic sewing kit at home to practice and complete homework (approximately 20 hours). EcoEquitable will supply the sewing machine during class.

Prerequisites: no sewing experience is required but a serious desire to learn a LOT in a short period of time.

All materials needed for the course are included in the class fee.
