Can’t sew? We can fix that. Join us for our comprehensive beginner course! Learn how to sew while exploring the world of fabric, commercial patterns, alterations, and classic sewing techniques.
You will make a skirt fit for YOU and a cute sewing apron too!
You will learn to:
Operate a sewing machine
Sewing techniques (stay stitching, gathering, darts, hand stitches, and more!)
Properly press and iron garments for sewing
Take proper measurements
Identify and use various types of fabric, thread, and interfacing
Select the right fabric for your project
Work with commercial patterns
Construct a basic garment (skirt)
Students will need a domestic sewing machine, iron, and basic sewing kit at home to practice and complete homework (approximately 20 hours). EcoEquitable will supply the sewing machine during class.
Prerequisites: no sewing experience is required but a serious desire to learn a LOT in a short period of time.
All materials needed for the course are included in the class fee.
About the instructor:
Sarada received her B.Sc in Nursing from Delhi University and a Masters in Public Health from Columbia University, in New York. Her sewing training began in High School where she studied Home economics with an emphasis in Sewing and Basic Garment Construction. Over the past several years, she has sewn professionally and as a hobby. While being self-taught in garment construction (Intermediate and Advanced) she is currently pursuing studies in Professional Sewing at the Richard Robinson School of Haute Couture, in Ottawa. She is also a graduate of the Palmer/Pletsch Beginners Sewing Instructor Program in Portland, Oregon. Via her beginner's sewing teaching classes, Sarada hopes to create "a community of sewers" who will build confidence and skills, while having lots of fun with their new found Hobby.

Written notice of cancellation may be processed with a full refund (minus a 10% admin fee) two weeks prior to the course starting. Cancellations received 1 week prior to the course are eligible for a 50% refund unless there is a wait list for the course. Cancellations within the final week prior to the course are non-refundable unless there is a wait list for the course and the course can be run with full attendance.
